Software Engineer / Development Engineer, Operations

  • Receives general instructions for new responsibilities from supervisor
  • Administer data center environment, remote installations, occasionally assist users with desktop installations. Fairly complex site with multiple operating systems (various Linux distributions, FreeBSD, Microsoft Windows, ESXi, blade centers, NetApp storage, etc..)
  • Help plan for future network and data center requirements
  • Administer switches, routers and vlans
  • Evaluate and recommend purchases
  • Assist with various projects on an ad-hoc basis
  • Monitor systems usage, access control, etc
  • Manage configuration, maintenance and upgrading of systems
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware problems
  • Resolve tickets in a reasonable amount of time

Job Requirements

  • 3 - 5 years UNIX/BSD/Linux systems administration experience
  • Ability to configure networking services and security on servers
  • OS installation, configuration, upgrades, maintenance experience
  • Networking at the physical (twisted pair, fiber optic) and logical (Ethernet, TCP/IP) level including various services and protocols (DNS, DHCP, LDAP)
  • Solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environments
  • Ability to write scripts in some administrative languages (Perl, Python, Ruby, Shell)
  • Familiarity with blade centers, VMWare, NetApp installations
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting ability
  • Independent problem-solving, self-direction


  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Programming background in any applicable language (Perl, Python, Ruby, Shell, C)
  • Familiarity with version control systems (CVS, SVN)
  • FreeBSD OS knowledge
